The community of Newcastle proved that even the most devastating floodwaters are no match for a unified heart, showing up in numbers for their beloved SPCA.

Newcastle, South Africa (20 November 2025) – When the SPCA Newcastle issued an SOS for help as pouring rain flooded the facility, the community braved the wet and cold to assist.

The SPCA’s office, cattery, storerooms, kennels, perimeter walls, and gates suffered extensive flooding last week, with even some electrical outlets soaked.

However, the support from the community greatly outweighed the damage, as members responded within minutes to help clear the flooded premises.

“Thank you to each and every person who came out to help us. You have no idea how much that meant to us and every animal in our care. Within minutes, our kennels were cleared of water, the back wall was opened up, and the gate was repaired. Thank you to everyone who cared enough and came out to support the SPCA,” an emotional member of the PSCA said in a video.

Fortunately, no animals were harmed during the ordeal.

Over the past few days, the SPCA has been working to restore normalcy at its premises, with teams undertaking the major task of clearing and cleaning what they can. They still require materials and equipment to complete these repairs, which will enable them to be fully operational again.

“When we couldn’t do any more, we cried for help, and you heard. I am so PROUD to be part of this community. Thank you, Newcastle! Since the night of the floods and afterwards, the support from the community has been absolutely amazing. Everyone who came out, called, messaged, offered assistance in many forms, or organised and donated supplies. Every single one of you is amazing.”

The heartfelt display of a community united in times of trouble speaks to the empathy and Ubuntu of our people.
