It’s been a busy year of growth for Greenpop who are celebrating a whopping 20,000 trees planted in 2024!
South Africa (04 November 2024) — Environmental conservation organisation Greenpop has had a busy year filled with an abundance of growth and a ton of new trees for South Africa to boast about! Thanks to the organisation and its friends, 20,000 trees have been planted this year as part of their forest restoration efforts, kicking up their total tree count to a whopping 257,122 trees.
For those who don’t know, Greenpop began with a humble goal to plant just 1,000 trees in a single month, back in the 2010s. This seed of a goal (that once seemed quite ambitious) has grown into an entire treevolution—one that’s restoring habitats and supporting ecosystems that otherwise might’ve been left in the dust.
The team recently shared some points of success from their green adventures, including news that the Khoinania Forest Restoration site is flourishing (and even showcasing progress from its last assessment in January), while the Kraaibosch site is showing even better growth than anticipated. Kraaibosch battled a difficult clay soil terrain and Eucalyptus infestation (a big obstacle for the growth of indigenous species even after removal), so its slow and steady progress is certainly noteworthy.
Greenpop currently has four of these active Forest for Life Projects; each of which benefits not only environmental heath but also the communities nearby who are reliant on forest resources.
The happy news of 20,000 trees also comes after a fantastic Reforest Fest earlier this year—Greenpop’s flagship festival that united people from all over the country to get their hands dirty in the spirit of tree planting-goodness. This year, attendees planted 5,000 Indigenous trees!
In good news for urban areas, Greenpop has launched its new urban greening project known as Living Landscapes which aims to expand green spaces and contribute positively to eco-education—an essential part of boosting urban biodiversity!
If you’ve been inspired to plant or sponsor a tree (you can even gift a tree to someone for the festive season!) You can support Greenpop here.
