Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve has fewer invasive species on its trails, thanks to a group of volunteers and their successful once-a-month Saturday hacks.
Pretoria, South Africa (21 September 2026) – Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve has hosted volunteers every second Saturday of the month this year in an effort to tidy up green spaces of the reserve and remove invasive species.
Last week, they grabbed their tools and got stuck into hacking down privets, black wattles and other invasives. Their efforts contributed to the hard work done along the reserve’s Suikerbos route in the last few weeks.

The group gets an early start at around 7 AM and finishes up by 11 AM – totalling around four hours of TLC for the local nature reserve.
The reserve is a local gem in Pretoria, home to springbuck, zebra, blesbok, impala, duiker, bushbuck, ostrich and abundant birdlife.
Friends of Moreleta Kloof come from far and wide to dedicate their time towards clearing up trails and sections of the 100-hectare natural space. Saturday hacks happen once a month, while volunteers also meet on Wednesdays to focus their efforts on broader clean-up and maintenance of the reserve.

One such volunteer is Zack, a committed volunteer at the reserve for many years.
“Zack has been such a model Volunteer over so many years, always coming back, even from Stellenbosch University, to work. His brother Adam does the same…” Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve shared on Facebook.
The recent Saturday hack included celebrations for Zack’s 21st birthday. A cake was shared amongst the group – a happy way to end a day of hard work, and a well-deserved honour to a young man who has dedicated so much of his time toward looking out for his local environment!
