Two charming sea turtles, Oink and Olive, found themselves stranded on the shores of the KZN northern coastline. After undergoing careful examination and treatment, Oink and Olive are slowly recovering and should be back to their ocean adventures soon.
Durban, South Africa (10 November 2024) – With turtle stranding season in full swing, the staff and volunteers of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) have been kept on their toes while caring for precious marine creatures swept onto KZN’s sandy shores.
Following the recent admission of Rocky the Southern Elephant Seal, the team also welcomed two very beautiful Hawksbill turtles, Oink and Olive, who both found themselves stranded and alone on separate northern KZN beaches.
These gentle creatures are known for their beautiful shells and crucial role in marine ecosystems. However, they are also greatly threatened by illegal wildlife trade, making their survival a cause for concern.
Oink is the smaller of the two turtles and was brought in from Cape Vidal. Olive, who is ten times bigger than his fellow friend, originated from Mazengwenya in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Both turtles were relocated to Durban on different occasions by members of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, coming all the way from northern KwaZulu-Natal.
“Upon arrival, both animals appeared exhausted but only Olive was found to be slightly underweight. Initially, we were cautious about their chances of survival but after various diagnostic tests, (radiographs and blood), and high levels of specialised care, their prognosis is now rated as cautiously optimistic.
“Both animals are healing well and will remain under close observation for the next few weeks,” SAAMBR shared.
Hopefully, these two beauties, Oink and Olive, will soon resume their ocean travels and support coral reefs.
