Fire crews from the Winelands showed up in full force. Heroes battled a fast-moving veld fire that threatened a popular wine estate and everything around it.
Western Cape, South Africa (08 January 2026) – On Tuesday, a runaway fire near the popular Boschendal Estate escalated into a serious threat fast. Thick smoke was visible for kilometres as flames took through dry veld.

DFW Fire & Rescue received the the call for help from Boschendal management and arrived on scene in minutes. They were joined by Stellenbosch Fire Brigade and Winelands Fire Protection Association.
Teams coordinated a rapid response, splitting up to cut off the fire’s path under extremely challenging conditions. They fought through intense heat, heavy smoke and near-zero visibility.

“The final stand came at the main road Franshhoek/ Paarl as border to Soms Delta Farm. The trucks all took position and the watercanons stood their grounds against a wall of fire approaching,” shares DFW Fire & Rescue.
Teams held their ground in every sense of the word.
“Here true bravery under extreme circumstances with zero visibility was shown, especially by the canon operators on top of the truck outside. In minutes, the cruisers and trucks were surrounded by a wall of heat and fire and luckily it lasted only a few minutes and then victory was declared.”
With visibility gone and heat bearing down, firefighters (including cannon operators working from the exposed tops of trucks) kept pushing as flames surrounded the vehicles.
Thankfully within minutes, fighters managed to push back the line of fire and the threat was contained.
Private and public services, community members and local businesses all chipped in to help. Traffic officials and security forces helped to clear roads. Franschhoek Farmwatch assisted with coordination. Residents from Delta Crest stepped in, supplying water to fire trucks via pool pumps.
Fire season is far from over and weather forecasts indicate continued high-risk conditions in the days ahead.
“The fire season is taking its toll and we are definitive not out of the danger zone yet and weather predictions are truly terrible for the coming days again.” shares DFW Fire & Rescue.
Fire crews across the Cape are under extreme pressure at the moment.
They operate knowing the risks, with limited resources and under extreme pressure. Supporting fire services, respecting warnings and backing the organisations that keep responding is essential.
Thank you to all of our brave heroes for holding the line.
