Hundreds of kilograms of waste, consisting of both big eyesores and tiny pollutants, were removed from Milnerton Lagoon Beach over the weekend!
Milnerton, South Africa (23 September 2024) — It was a big weekend for beaches across the world thanks to the celebration of International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday. Amongst the many South Africans who joined forces to clean up coastal areas were those who united to tackle Milnerton Lagoon Beach, which, after the dust settled, proved to be an effort well worth embarking on.
At the beach, Save a Fishie and volunteers worked their way through clothes, bottle tops and nappies. They cleared around 400 kg on Saturday and 394 kg on Sunday.
Not only did Milnerton Lagoon Beach get to enjoy the eco-version of an ‘extreme home makeover’, it also saw scavengers on the hunt for nurdles as part of the Great Global Nurdle Hunt—a global initiative underway this September that’s shown just how much the small things can add up in the worst way.
What are Nurdles?
Nurdles are essentially plastic pellets that are often mistaken for tiny stones. While they are small in size, their problematic magnitude is great. As Nurdle Hunt informs, the plastic industry loses 22 trillion nurdles a year, contributing to their place as the second most dominant source of microplastic pollution.
“2024 is a big year for ending nurdle pollution, “ share the Nurdle Hunt team. “Results from The Great Global Nurdle Hunt 2024 will be used by NGOs to highlight the issue to governments and call for change at the United Nations negotiations for a global plastics treaty.”
Although International Coastal Cleanup Day is over, South Africans still have Heritage Day to use as the perfect excuse not just to braai our hearts out, but to take the time to tackle a clean-up or two in an effort to preserve the one heritage we all share—our natural heritage!
