Crafted from recycled materials, Westville Girls’ High’s lifelike rhino sculpture named Ingelosi serves as a powerful symbol of hope and a reminder of the urgent need for rhino conservation.
Durban, South Africa (11 September 2024) – Seeking to address two very important conservation and environmental matters through the power of art was Westville Girls’ High School learners and staff who joined together to create a magnificent rhino sculpture.
The majestic, lifelike masterpiece Ingelosi (Angel) has been carefully crafted out of recycled plastic, cooldrink bottles, cans, lids, corks, paper, and other colourful waste to celebrate World Rhino Month while being conscious of the environment.
September marks Rhino Month in the environment sector, and it coincides with World Rhino Day, which is commemorated every year on 22 September, GoRhino explains.
In 2010, WWF-South Africa introduced World Rhino Day to celebrate the five species of rhino: the black rhino, white rhino, greater one-horned, Sumatran, and Javan rhinos.
Ingelosi hasn’t only caused a spectacle at the school but has also been welcomed with online praise on the socials – and judging by her bright colours, dynamic textures and meticulously crafted body it is not hard to see why!
Beyond her beauty, the project’s creative approach, which combines the urgent need for rhino conservation with the everyday practicality of recycling, is remarkable and inspires us to take tangible action in our daily lives.
“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the helping hands that contributed to this beautiful effort. A special shoutout goes to Mrs Whyte-Sweet for her unwavering dedication to this project,” the school shared.
