Thanks to the swift response of local wildlife rescue organisations, Ezemvelo KZN and CROW, a young Nile crocodile is being nursed back to good health.

Durban, South Africa (09 September 2024) – A young Nile crocodile, weakened and stranded on Ballito Beach, was rescued by a team of wildlife experts.

The 750mm reptile was initially taken to Crocodile Creek, and her stomach was flushed to remove any salt water she may have swallowed.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife then contacted the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), and the Operations Director and Reptile Expert, Clint Halkett-Siddall, stepped in to transport her safely to the centre.

According to CROW, the Nile crocodile is a threatened and protected species (TOPS). TOPS is a list compiled and updated originally listing species that were critically endangered and animals facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the near future.

“She is now resting in our Aviary Enclosure, complete with a pond, where she will stay for the next few months to recover and gain strength and size before being released with our other crocodile of around the same size,” CROW shared.

Talk about dream work making the team work! The successful rescue is a heartfelt example of the importance of community involvement and collaboration in protecting endangered wildlife.
