The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has been raising several Large Spotted Genets which are set to be released when they are older.

Johannesburg, South Africa (09 November 2021) – Wildlife rehabilitation is a challenge as the goal is to get an animal back to health while keeping a distance so they can be released back into the wild. The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital walks this line every day and does it really well!

Over the weeks they have been taking in Large Spotted Genets and raising them for release back into the wild. Their usual diet consists of rodents and other small mammals including birds, snakes and amphibians, they also eat some fruit.

Genet mothers will have up to three babies per litter and they live in nests above ground until weaned. They are solitary and live in areas with a good water source and a very wooded area.

“We are currently raising eight Large spotted genets (Genetta Maculata) which were all admitted to our facility in the last weeks.

The genets were each admitted as neonates, and are currently all being hand-reared with a special milk formula. Soon they will be old enough to start eating solids and once they are self-sufficient, they will all go into a soft-release process. In this process, the genets will be support fed until they are fully independent and have established their own territory. It is a lengthy but rewarding process. Please enjoy a few photos of their process thus far.”

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital treats indigenous for free, so they rely on donations to keep doing the good work they do. Below are the various payment options for the Wildlife Vet; they rely on donations, so if you can, you can donate through the methods below.
