From clean-up campaigns to educational workshops, the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region (K2C Biosphere) communities came together to celebrate International Day for Biosphere Reserves with a week of inspiring environmental action.

Limpopo, South Africa (14 November 2024) – While I’m no environmental expert, every year, the urgency to address environmental issues becomes clearer. We have only one planet, and it is essential that we do our part to protect it.

Coming to the party to save our plant this International Day for Biosphere Reserves were the environmental stewards of the Namakgale, Phiring, London Landfill, Bushbuckridge, and Islington communities.

Together, the members of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Region (also known as K2C Biosphere) marked the international day with powerful community-led environmental actions from 4-8 November.

The K2C Biosphere Ecosystem Custodian teams saw each cluster take steps toward a healthier biosphere.

Registered with UNESCO, K2C Biosphere deals with the conservation of biodiversity, sustainable development, education and research.

Highlights from the five-day initiative included clean-up campaigns, sustainability education, and awareness sessions.

In Namakgale, a clean-up and sustainable agriculture awareness session featured seedling giveaways while students in Phiring explored riverine forests, learning about conservation and tourism.

Bushbuckridge youth and locals focused on proper waste disposal. Waste reclaimers at London Landfill offered waste management tours, and the celebrations wrapped up with a cleanup and friendly soccer match at Islington Sports Ground.

Driven by a strong community spirit, these small yet impactful environmental actions are significantly contributing to the protection of biosphere reserves and the earth at large.

“Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to this impactful week, reinforcing our commitment to environmental stewardship and community unity across the biosphere,” K2C Biosphere said in a post.
