A mysterious ship figurehead is sporting a new shade of lippie and refreshed garbs thanks to a team of volunteers and heritage champions at SA’s southernmost tip!

Western Cape, South Africa (12 April 2026) – She stands tall opposite the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse. Everyone who sees her thinks she’s a statue of someone important, and she actually fools visitors all the time. But the truth is even more interesting!

The Wooden Lady of Agulhas, also known as the Lady of Mystery, is a replica of a ship figurehead carved out of wood that once stood on the prow of a sailing ship that met its fate on this very coastline back around 1877.

“She bears silent testimony to the many shipwrecks along this treacherous coastline, and the legendary tales of tragedy, bravery and survival that endure to this day.” shares SANParks Honorary Rangers.

Sailors often called these carvings their good luck charms. Some were goddesses, animals, or beautiful women carved in wood and mounted at the bow, believed to calm stormy seas and guide ships safely home.

Well, this Lady needed a little help herself, and a remarkable team showed up to give it to her. After nearly nine hours of dedicated work, the Wooden Lady of Agulhas has been fully restored, repainted, and returned to her rightful post at the Cape Agulhas Lighthouse. Looking as regal as ever!

“[She] has been resurrected thanks to a team from the Agulhas National Park, the SANParks Honorary Rangers, Lighthouse Paints and the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum.” adds the honorary rangers.

She now stands tall again, ready to cast her watchful eye over the waters and wish all who pass safe sailing.
