Over two dedicated days, the community of Lavender Hill witnessed a beautiful display of teamwork as Paws-a-While, Aid 4 Animals in Distress, and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA joined forces to give their animals a more sustainable future.

Cape Town, South Africa (16 February 2026) – A collaborative, large-scale animal sterilisation campaign conducted in Lavender Hill last week transformed the lives of over a hundred local pets and their families.

Delivered through a partnership between Paws-a-While, Aid 4 Animals in Distress, and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, the two-day campaign successfully sterilised 109 animals, addressing one of the primary drivers of animal overpopulation, neglect, and strain on welfare resources.

Since February 2025, the collaborating organisations have collectively sterilised 713 animals in Lavender Hill, bringing most community-owned pets into the programme. Reaching this level of coverage and a significant milestone is widely recognised as a critical tipping point, where breeding slows significantly, and population growth becomes sustainably manageable over time.

With the pet population in Lavender Hill now largely under control, the campaign represents a meaningful step toward safer, healthier conditions for animals and residents alike.

Veterinary services were provided by Envirovet, recently re-branded as SteriVet, whose experienced team ensured the safe and efficient delivery of the procedures.

Sterilisation remains the most effective and humane method for preventing unwanted litters, reducing roaming and fighting, and easing pressure on already overburdened rescue and welfare organisations.

“This campaign demonstrates what is possible when organisations work together toward a shared goal,” said Carolyn Dudgeon from Paws-a-While.

“By focusing on prevention and community access, we can create lasting change.”

Thanks to support from Lionel’s Choice, which donated a bag of food for every animal treated during the campaign, each animal returned home with both medical care and nutritional support.

The animal heroes expressed their sincere thanks to Levana Primary School for hosting the campaign and providing a safe, accessible venue for community members to access these essential services.

Gratitude is also extended to the Lavender Hill residents who brought their animals for treatment, the veterinary and welfare teams who worked tirelessly over the two days, and all partners and supporters who contributed to the success of the campaign!

With this milestone reached, the organisations involved will now turn their focus to Cafda, a community that has until now been completely untouched in terms of animal welfare support, with plans underway for a sterilisation campaign in recognition of World Spay Day later this month.
