Two lonely peacocks were rescued 75km apart, and on their drive back to the farm, they fell in love – This animal rescue story has us feeling the love!
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 May 2022) – The Owl Rescue Centre recently did a rescue, and the story is like something straight out of a fairytale. They rescued two lonely peacocks, and the peacocks fell in love the second they met!
The Owl Rescue Centre rehabilitates and cares for injured and captive owls from all over the Gauteng area. Its main aim is to protect, rescue and release owls back into the wild; however, the organisation helps all birds in need.
They recently got a call about a lone Peahen that was living in a Pretoria suburb by herself. She was named Gloria, but it was evident she needed to be rescued from her isolated life. The Owl Rescue team loaded up the big animal carrier and went to fetch her.
While out collecting Gloria, a second call came in to rescue a Peacock that was also living by himself in a Johannesburg suburb. The team decided that they would go fetch the Peacock and place him in the same carrier as Gloria. They hoped the animals would be ok together while they drove back to the rescue centre.
“With us travelling with only one large wildlife carrier, our thinking was we’ll place them together on the road trip to their new home on a farm, if they had niggles with each other then we’d separate them and make a new plan.”
What they never expected was that these two lonely birds would connect during that drive to their new home and fall in love. The team named the Peacock Romeo, and the rest was history.
“Not sure when last we were witness to love at first sight, but we definitely saw it today. When we placed Romeo in that carrier Gloria’s eyes lit up and you could see her whole persona change. And our one wildlife carrier was sufficient”
Sometimes the kindest thing you can do for an animal is to give them a friend. Gloria and Romeo are now living happily ever after on a large farm away from the dangers of city life.
