A dedicated veterinary surgeon and a rottweiler’s selfless act of canine kindness have given a 10-year-old Miniature Schnauzer a second chance after facing a life-threatening medical emergency.

Boksburg, South Africa (03 June 2025) – Any rescue that saves an animal from dire circumstances is significant. It is a testament to the efforts of everyone involved and a triumph for the life spared from pain and adversity. But some rescues just hit differently.

This one is of a brave Miniature Schnauzer named Max, who recently underwent a complex surgery that not only tested his limits but also saw a fellow rottweiler extend a lifeline and a dedicated surgeon go to great lengths to get him the vital care he required.

The adorable furry guy had been referred to the Craig View Veterinary Clinic with a suspected foreign object in his stomach, which later turned out to be stones. However, further examination uncovered a more complex situation: a mass on his spleen and free blood in the abdomen, prompting Dr Ross’ immediate action to address the emergency.

“During surgery, we discovered that Max’s spleen was bleeding due to a haemangiosarcoma, an aggressive tumour,” the clinic shared in a post.

“We quickly removed the spleen to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, the left liver lobe was also actively bleeding, requiring a liver lobectomy. To make matters more complicated, Max had lost significant blood, necessitating a transfusion.”

Thankfully, a generous rottweiler blood donor, through Friend of the Rottweiler Rescue & Re-home South Africa, stepped in to help save 10-year-old Max’s life.

Despite the complicated surgery, Max has made a remarkable recovery. The stones were successfully removed, and he’s now being closely monitored.

“The histopathology report confirmed the splenic mass as haemangiosarcoma, and we’ll continue to provide Max with the best possible care,” the Craig View Veterinary Clinic assured.

A lot of good things contributed to transforming Max’s medical emergency into a hopeful outcome. Owing to the dedication of veterinary professionals and the power of inter-canine generosity, Max is now on the mend, and we are quite certain his parents are relieved and happy to see him on the road to recovery!
