The Midrand SPCA inspectorate team, always on the lookout for animals in need, recently made a heartwarming discovery. While patrolling the roads, they spotted a deceased chick, a tragic victim of a road accident, which soon led them to more chickens in need.
Midrand, South Africa (15 November 2024) – The work of animal welfare is a 24/7 job, filled with its fair share of surprises. With their animal detection radars always on alert, the Midrand SPCA inspectors are always on the lookout, their keen eyes scanning the roads during patrols for animals in distress.
Just last week, while out on their travels, they spotted a deceased chick that had unfortunately been run over by a vehicle.
Knowing that chicks rarely wander far from their mothers, the team diligently searched the area for the hen.
“Following their instincts, they searched the nearby area and soon discovered a distressed mother hen and four more vulnerable chicks who almost met the same fate as the poor deceased chick,” states Midrand SPCA.
The inspectors didn’t hesitate to check nearby homes for potential owners or areas where the chickens may have escaped, but the team later concluded that the chickens were strays.
Now safe and sound, mom and her chicks are at the SPCA where they are receiving the love and care that they deserve.
“Thank you to Inspector Theo Mokgatle, Inspector Jerry Seemise and Kennel Assistant Matome for your vigilance and for rescuing these sentient beings before disaster struck!”
The public’s support and donations enable the inspectorate team to respond to emergencies and provide critical care for all animals in need, just like this family of chickens whose fate could have had a tragic end.
