The Misverstand Dam is currently at 107% and overflowing. Capetonians are celebrating the good news and the continued rainfall.

Having grown up in Cape Town, I spent many of my childhood weekends camping at the Misverstand Resort. The dam is quite something to behold and popular for its water sports such as bass fishing, boating and water skiing. The dam is fed by the Berg River and surrounded by hills populated with farmlands.

The Water and Sanitation Department has confirmed the Misverstand Dam near Moorreesburg has been overflowing. On Monday, the dam was measured at just over a 107% full. Here is a fun fact, the dam got its name because of a misunderstanding about its size.

The Misverstand Dam provides water to towns further down the river. These include Saldanha Bay, Moorreesburg and Piketberg. The Berg River Dam released water to help the Misverstand Dam last month in the hopes that it would assist the West Coast towns reliant on the river. Thankfully, this overflow means these towns will have access to more water.

People have been celebrating the happy news on the Facebook group “Water Shedding Western Cape“.

“Wow, thank you. Never realized it was so bad. We spent many years at the dam with our boat and also doing bass fishing.” – Colleen Jansen
