When Zain Mashele’s son needed to create the South African flag using recyclables for a school project, this clever mom headed straight for the local dump. The result? Stunning – and South Africans are applauding this incredible mom-and-son team for turning waste into wonder.

Middleburg, South Africa (11 November 2025) – When her son was required to craft the national flag using recyclable materials, Zain Mashele pointed them in the direction of a local dump site near their neighbourhood.

A trending video shared on Facebook shows the process of how they went about collecting old cool drink bottle caps, cleaning them and bringing the school project to life – ultimately creating an impressive South African flag.

Talk about resourcefulness!

The video has since gained much love from South Africans who praised the mom and son duo for turning waste into wonder.

Good Things Guy got in touch with the proud mom, who shared that it took them about three hours to put the flag together, including scavenging for the bottle caps.

Also applauded online for being an involved parent, Zain shared with us that it is important for her to play an active role in supporting her son’s education.

“I am forever preaching to him the importance of school. Assisting him with such projects gives me an opportunity to not just preach but also to put my preaching into action.

“I believe it shows him how much I take his schoolwork seriously, which I believe will motivate him to take it more seriously as well. Working together also helps us to bond and have fun, like scavenging for the bottle caps. We got an opportunity to be filthy together, and I also think it shows him that he can always count on his mother.”

What started as a simple school assignment became a powerful lesson about seeing value where others see waste and a touching story about creativity, resourcefulness, and the bond between a mother and son!
