With more than 95,000 unique species, South Africa’s gardens play a vital role in preserving this incredible natural heritage. This National Gardens Week, SANBI is inviting nature lovers to experience the breathtaking landscapes that national botanical and zoological gardens have to offer for free!
South Africa (05 March 2025) – Imagine stepping into a world of natural beauty, where lush gardens flourish with indigenous plants, vibrant flowers, and winding pathways that lead to hidden waterfalls, tranquil ponds, and breathtaking landscapes.
Free access to SA’s garden gems
For the first time, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is inviting the public to immerse themselves in this magic by celebrating National Gardens Week with free access to all national botanical and zoological gardens from 10 to 16 March, offering the perfect escape into nature’s wonders.
Families, friends, nature lovers, and wellness seekers will get to experience the magic of South Africa’s biodiversity—one of the richest in the world!

Growing your joy in a fast-paced world
This year’s theme, “Grow Your Joy,” is more than just a phrase; it’s an invitation to reconnect with nature’s ability to uplift, heal, and inspire.
In a world where daily pressures, work-related stress, and economic challenges take a toll on our well-being, nature offers a simple yet powerful escape.
National Gardens Week is a reminder that spending time outdoors is not just about admiring beautiful scenery; it’s about embracing mindfulness, finding moments of peace, and enjoying the benefits of gentle movement and community connection.
Whether it’s a quiet walk among indigenous plants, the relaxation of a yoga session, the excitement of a guided tour, or a day of discovery with loved ones, SANBI’s gardens and zoological spaces provide a sanctuary for both people and wildlife.

Activities for everyone to enjoy
National Garden Week offers something for everyone. Families and children can enjoy interactive activities designed to inspire a love for nature, while health and wellness enthusiasts will benefit from the fresh air, mindfulness, and gentle exercise that comes with spending time outdoors.
Nature lovers and photographers will find endless opportunities to capture the beauty of rare plants, scenic landscapes, and wildlife, and community groups and educators can explore our gardens as outdoor classrooms filled with valuable learning experiences.
For those passionate about conservation, it’s an ideal time to connect with environmental efforts and learn how to make a meaningful impact on preserving our natural heritage.
With gardens represented in all nine provinces, from the famous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town to the breathtaking Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Johannesburg, every SANBI garden offers a unique way to experience nature.

This year, visitors can look forward to a range of activities, including daily garden tours, plant sales at our various nurseries, exciting educational programs, park runs, yoga sessions, gardening techniques and demonstrations, and an Art in the Park event.
Each location provides an opportunity to explore the rich diversity of South Africa’s landscapes and indigenous plants, making National Gardens Week a nationwide celebration of biodiversity.
