Penguin parents part of the Two Oceans Aquarium have welcomed a new generation of African penguins for the first time in a decade.

Cape Town, South Africa (06 March 2025) — As the survival of the African Penguin species faces its most critical period, good news has come from the Two Oceans Aquarium’s African penguin colony. A new generation of African Penguins has hatched, to the immense delight of their penguin parents and the staff caring for the colony.

According to the Two Oceans Aquarium, the new generation of African Penguins made their way to the world in early February. What makes the occasion even more significant for the team is that this is the first time in 10 years that new chicks have been welcomed to the Aquarium’s beach. Considering the species’ newfound Critically Endangered status, the births amplify even more in importance.

If you’re interested in different generations and their characteristics, you might enjoy knowing that these chicks aren’t just a new generation for the Aquarium; they’re actually part of a new generation for the world—Generation Beta!

Thus far, the chicks have been enjoying life in their nests while penguin parents Neptune and Alan keep careful watch over their little ones. At this stage, penguin chicks in their grey, fluffy state are entirely dependent on their elders.

As it takes a village, the Aquarium’s dedicated Penguin Keepers have also been present to ensure that the chicks thrive, while vet Dr Ilse Jenkinson has conducted regular check-ups to track the chicks’ health.

Meanwhile, in more African Penguin chick news, the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) took in 496 chicks last year with an 84% release rate!
