A #LocalNatureHero could be someone whose actions are as simple as picking up litter, planting a vegetable garden or saving water. Or they could be as innovative as creating new products or systems with sustainability in mind.

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 March 2021) – This year’s Earth Hour, which takes place on 27 March 2021 at 8:30 pm local time, will be a key moment to unite people to speak up for nature.

The lights-off Earth Hour moment has been celebrated in South Africa and the world over for more than a decade. It has seen homes, streets, buildings, landmarks, and city skylines go dark – an unmissable sight that drew public attention to nature loss and the climate crisis. Today Earth Hour is not just about switching off but also about shining the light on the threats facing nature and repairing our relationship with nature.

In the build-up to Earth Hour, WWF wants to celebrate those around us who are taking action to benefit people and nature. We want to show that every small act of good makes a difference and that we can also inspire others to make a nature-positive difference. This year – amidst the current global pandemic – we invite South Africans to raise awareness by telling us about their local nature heroes on our social media channels.

The person who makes the winning nomination will bag an AfriCamps Boutique Glamping getaway while the winning nominee takes home R3,000 for their project.

Who is eligible to be a #LocalNatureHero?

A #LocalNatureHero could be someone whose actions are as simple as picking up litter, planting a vegetable garden or saving water. Or they could be as innovative as creating new products or systems with sustainability in mind.

  • You can also create a separate post with this information but remember to tag @WWFSouthAfrica and use the hashtag #LocalNatureHero.

Glamping prize for winning nomination

AfriCamps is offering a two-night stay complimentary for up to five guests at any one of their 11 locations across South Africa. AfriCamps is South Africa’s boutique glamping specialist providing fully equipped self-catering getaways on some of the most beautiful working farms, estates and nature reserves in the country – from Wellington in the Cape Winelands to Hoedspruit close to the Kruger National Park. Each camp offers a variety of activities suitable for the entire family. From bush walks and game drives to forest hikes or just relaxing next to the camp pool, there is a camp to suit everyone’s needs. AfriCamps and their camp partners value conservation and sustainability. White Elephant Safaris in Pongola Game Reserve, where AfriCamps has 12 glamping tents, goes to great lengths to conserve and protect elephant and rhino among others and is also involved in the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project .

Furthermore, AfriCamps empowers local staff to handcraft all AfriCamps tents and furniture using as many sustainable products as possible. They use locally forested softwoods for their furniture, instead of importing tropical variants. Various camps offer educational activities to teach guests of all ages how valuable South African farming industries are and that each person has a direct impact on the world around them. Guests learn about wildlife and farming industries and where the fresh produce on their dinner tables come from, all while spending time in the great outdoors.

In addition, the person who is nominated will win R3000 in cash for their project, courtesy of WWF.
