Northwood School staff and learners came together to contribute to environmental conservation by planting two significant trees.

Durban, South Africa (13 September 2024) – Not only is it Spring, but it’s also Arbour Month and the gents down at Northwood School put their green fingers to work as they played their part in giving back to Mother Nature.

The school’s Arbor Day ceremony on 5 September commenced with two trees being planted with lively performances by Northwood’s brass band.

Based on its ecological and cultural significance, Dr Shaw planted Searsia Leptodictya, more commonly known as the Mountain Karee, and South Africa’s Tree for the Year 2024.

“Its hardy nature and attractive foliage make it a popular choice for gardens, providing both shade and an aesthetic appeal.

“Its dense canopy provides shelter for wildlife whilst its small, berry-like fruit attracts birds – promoting biodiversity. Additionally, its use in traditional medicine is a resource for local communities,” Northwood shared.

Deputy Headmaster, Mr Govender’s tree of choice was the Karomia Speciosa, a rare and critically endangered tree.

It is said that there are fewer than 90 mature Karomia Speciosa trees left in the wild across East Africa, making it one of the most endangered plant species on the planet due to deforestation.

The school’s choices of trees reflect its commitment to preserving biodiversity and promoting a greener future.

“We at Northwood have decided to take an active role in the conservation of K. Speciosa. The plight of K. Speciosa serves as a reminder of the fragility of our planet’s biodiversity and the urgent need to protect it.

“This is the very reason we decided to bring this plant home, in an effort to sustain our environment and maintain the rich biodiversity of the continent.”
