This is what happens when communities come together!

Cape Town, South Africa (25 March 2020) – South Africa’s lockdown will begin on the 26th of March 2020 at 23:59, but this does not mean the plight of abandoned and abused animals will end over this time.

Many animal sanctuaries will remain open, trying to keep up with the demand while making sure their in-house residents are taken care of as well.

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is one of these institutions but needed help during the next 21 days.

“The Cape of Good Hope SPCA will commit to doing everything we can within the ambit of current legislation to prevent animal suffering at this time. The SPCA will have 23 staff, including a qualified Veterinarian, quarantined with our animals on-site. This team of dedicated individuals will be leaving their families and their home comforts to ensure that all our current animals are cared for and that stray and critically ill animals can still be admitted at this time.

We are appealing to the public to assist us with caravans to enable this team of individuals to sleep with a measure of comfort and privacy while on-site.”

Calvin Hayward – Producer at The Network Productions – saw the post and put out a call to his followers to try to assist.

“On the subject of Pets, we have been doing some work with the SPCA, and there are about 20 staff that are actually self quarantining themselves and moving into the Cape SPCA facility in Grassy Park for the 21 days … but it’s not a hotel, and they are going to need help staying there. Anyone out there with a Caravan/extra bed/ mattress they could lend.”

Fleet Star Trailers saw Hayward’s post and immediately donated their beautiful on-set trailers for the SPCA staff to stay in while they lock themselves down with the animals.

The company supplies the film, television, commercials, and events industries with the finest mobile location facilities available in South Africa.

“With 75 units available for actors, celebrities and crew, Fleet Star is uniquely positioned to provide the best possible solution for your on-set accommodation needs at an affordable price. Our fleet is meticulously maintained and regularly upgraded to ensure we meet the exacting demands of clients who expect nothing but the best.”

The SPCA also anticipate that many animals will be abandoned at this time as people leave for their homes in other provinces and they are in the process of setting up a system for pet food donations at supermarkets.

“We ask that you think of our animals at this time and that you assist with a donation of pet food whenever you shop for yourself and your families. A list of participating stores will be provided in due course. Please use the number 0833261604 to contact the SPCA during Lockdown.”
