Hunting the hunted: USA pack dogs taking on poachers in SA.

The latest weapon against South African poaching!

Some very special dogs have just arrived in South Africa. A gift from a breeder in Texas in the United States. But these are no ordinary house pets. Rather, they’re the latest weapon in the fight against poachers.

While dogs have previously been used as sniffer dogs, these pups have been trained to work as a pack to hunt down poachers, and hold on to them until rangers arrive.

“They use whatever force is necessary to stop the suspect from fleeing. If the guy wants to run then they’re going to grab the clothing and pull the person down until you get there and you can make a lawful arrest.”

The dogs can reach speeds of around 40km per hour over short distances and can cover areas of more than 30km in just two hours.

It’s crucial work: in 2017 more than 1000 rhinos and 68 elephants were killed in South Africa by poachers.
