April marks the start of African Penguin eggs hatching each year; this year you can adopt an egg for Easter or just because they are so flippen cute!
South Africa (04 April 2023) – Chocolate is the best but if you are wanting to do a little more this Easter, you can adopt an African Penguin egg from SANCCOB (Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds). The team are starting to hatch out their rescued eggs so it’s the perfect time to adopt yours!
“Give your loved ones an eggs-travagant gift for Easter that truly symbolises new life! If you adopt an African penguin egg at SANCCOB you will be donating to the incubation and care we provide until the day a tiny penguin chick hatches, and you will have the joy of knowing that you contributed to helping us conserve an endangered species.”
Penguin numbers across South African coastlines are in decline. This is worrying, which makes saving every penguin vital. Every effort to save the species and establish new colonies is being taken, not only by SANCCOB but by many other local organisations too. However, SANCCOB is the only organisation in the world to artificially incubate and hatch wild-origin African penguin eggs and hand-rear the chicks for release back into the wild, with the aim of bolstering the declining wild population.
“Did you know that African penguin eggs are incubated for approximately 40 days and can take up to 48 hours for the chick to emerge once it pips? At present, we can incubate up to 200 eggs and every egg is safe and sound, weighed and turned daily, and carefully checked to monitor the development of the embryo until hatch day.”
So if you need a gift for a loved one this Easter that isn’t chocolate, this could be the one!
