Hout Bay-based upcycling initiative Re.Bag.Re.Use has long been repurposing plastic into fabulous bags and accessories. And they’ve collected a neat series of awards along the way, including a recent international win!

Global (22 November 2024) — The Re.Bag.Re.Use Initiative has just earned added another award to the tally thanks to the recent Global Alliance World PR and Communications Awards 2024!

Once an old hobby revisited by Regine le Roux, today Hout Bay-based Re.Bag.Re.Use is a shining example in the world of upcycling for a greater purpose.

Thanks to a dedicated team of women, the initiative has repurposed tonnes of plastic—largely through the art of crochet—into gorgeous bags and accessories and even homeware that’s then sold.

Through this mindful crafting, the Re.Bag.Re.Use team have inspired South Africans far beyond Hout Bay to reimagine the value of discarded waste; all while providing a way for underprivileged women to put food on the table.

Since its inception, Re.Bag.Re.Use has gone on to collect a neat stack of awards, including those from the 2022 ECCO International Communication Network, the 2023 Stevie Award (Silver for Startup of the Year) and the 2024 PRISM Award where they earned gold for the Corporate Citizen category.

Their recent addition? The Global Alliance World Public Relations & Communication Award in the ESG Category!

“We’re so humbled, thrilled and incredibly grateful to every single person and organisation who has contributed—and continues to contribute—to this beautiful initiative,” Re.Bag.Re.Use shared.

This Global Alliance awards saw over 100 entries from all over the world submitted, but only a handful of campaigns and initiatives would make it all the way to the finish line.

Re.Bag.Re.Use was the only South African initiative to make the grade and shines proudly for its eco-social savvy superpowers.
