The Rhino Orphanage recently shared pictures of their anti-poaching K9, Hunter, who has developed a sweet friendship with one of the rhino orphans at the facility.
Undisclosed Location (29 April 2022) – The Rhino Orphanage takes care of all the calves left behind due to poaching. These young rhinos often need 24-hour specialised care, which is why they are taken from the wild and cared for at the orphanage. They would not survive out in the wild on their own.
Many of the rhino calves at the orphanage form bonds with each other and turn to each other for comfort. This is especially true when winter sets in and the nights become longer and colder. Sometimes, they form more unlikely friendships, like with an anti-poaching and security dog tasked to protect all the rhino at the orphanage.
In the wild, a rhino calf would draw warmth from its mother, but as that security has been taken away, the rhino orphans get to snuggle with each other in the winter months. The Rhino Orphanage shared a photo recently showing how Hunter and rhino orphan Kwayera snuggle up.
“Our amazing Anti-poaching & Security dog Hunter, has met little Kwayera and the two have instantly connected. Hunter is very protective of the baby and is quite content just being with him all day. We know an extra special friendship is starting to form here. We are so privileged to have a such a remarkable dog on our Team. No doubt he will give his life to protect humans and rhinos at the orphanage.”
The pair are only just getting to know each other and we can’t wait to see how the friendship grows. Hunter’s role at the orphanage is one of great importance.
