A group of wildlife heroes swooped in and relocated the rhino back to safety in the park.
Kruger National Park, South Africa (13 January 2026) – Weather conditions have been rough in parts of the Kruger this week. After days of heavy rainfall, several rivers are currently flowing at high speed. On Monday, South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed the closure of Pafuri and Punda Maria Gates, as well as all roads leading from Lower Sabie to Skukuza and Satara. More about that here.
In the midst of the intensifying weather, a white rhino that had been under close monitoring by SANParks and Sabi Sands walked itself right out of the park, into a position it couldn’t quite escape.

“A white rhino which we have been monitoring with Sabi Sands, was in poor condition and was stuck in a position he could not get out of. Rising rivers were also a great concern. Thank you to the team for the efforts and coordination to protect the rhino,” SANParks shared in the SANParks – Kruger National Park Facebook group.
A team quickly assembled to help relocate the distressed rhino back into the park. People from various departments jumped in to assist, led by the park’s Ranger Services. Ensuring everybody’s safety, the crew stopped traffic on either side of the gate to ensure a swift operation.
“Heroes in applets swooped in this afternoon to save a precious lost rhino in distress,” SANParks wrote. “The KNP team from various departments led by Ranger Services had to temporarily stop traffic on either side of the Paul Kruger Gate to ensure that the rhino is safely relocated back into the park.”
Once the rhino had been safely relocated back into another area of the park, operations resumed as usual. Never a dull moment in the bush. Thanks to Kruger’s rhino-relocating legends!
