When a distressed dog became stranded on a river island, it took a concerned community and a heroic team effort to bring him safely back to dry land.
Tshwane, South Africa (25 February 2026) – When community members heard the continuous howls of a dog coming from the Hennops River, they grew concerned. Several residents alerted the Tshwane SPCA, reporting a distressed dog that appeared to be trapped on a small island, unable to free itself.
Recognising the urgency, SPCA Inspectors responded immediately to assess the scene.
“Upon arrival, it became clear that the strong current and difficult terrain made the rescue extremely challenging,” the team noted.

After exhausting their available resources, the inspectors realised they needed more hands on deck. It was clear that specialised assistance would be required to ensure the dog’s safe recovery.
They reached out to the South African Police Service Tshwane Diving Unit, whose expertise and teamwork were instrumental in safely retrieving the frightened dog from the island.
Though it is unclear how he ended up in the peculiar spot in the first place, what could have ended in tragedy became a story of hope, compassion, and collaboration.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to the South African Police Service Tshwane Diving Unit, especially W/O Nienaber and Cst Floors, for their swift response, professionalism, and unwavering commitment.”
The dog was successfully rescued and transported to the SPCA for further assessment, care, and monitoring.
“This rescue, thanks to the coordinated efforts of all involved, serves as a powerful reminder that no matter the circumstances, we can never leave an animal in need unattended. Every life matters. Animals rely on us to be their voice and their protection, especially in moments when they are most vulnerable.”

The SPCA also acknowledges and thanks the members of the public who reported the incident, which ultimately led to a stranded dog being brought to safety.
