Tortoise

Anischka Prisilla Tosen filmed a beautiful moment when a tortoise found water after a large amount of rain blessed Skukuza.

Skukuza, South Africa – Anischka Prisilla Tosen was driving along when she spotted a thirsty tortoise gulping up water on the road after a massive rain.

Rain is always needed in the dry Kruger region and is welcomed any time it falls. Tortoises can go long periods of time without food or water so when there is an abundance, they take advantage.

It is so sweet to see the little guy gulping up his fill of water off the tarred road where a small puddle had formed.

Did you know, tortoises can extract water and nutrients from even the most meagre meals they find. Their hindgut system has a double digestive tract which separating water from bodily waste. When water is scarce, as it so often is in the Kruger, they store their water waste and excrete the rest, which looks similar to white toothpaste.

Many of the bush animals flock to watering holes to drink enough to get them through the day or until they wander over to the next watering hole. But… when it rains, they have more moisture on the leaves that they eat and the rivers flow thicker.

Over the years, many animals have been filmed taking advantage of fresh rains. We love seeing animals drink their fill when it rains.

Take a look at the little guy’s drinking session below.
