diversity

South Africa is blessed with diversity in every aspect of life, from our people and our environments to our wildlife and our marine life, this we should celebrate!

Every week there is a new video posted online by someone who has travelled around South Africa, seen its truest beauty and then celebrated our diverse country. With every one of these videos, we beam with joy that people see what wonder we have here in our country.

We would like to invite you to take a moment, sit back, relax and take a read of the wonderful things we can be proud of in South Africa. We have a diversity so rich that people who visit us, almost never want to leave.

Today let’s focus on South African marine life. How blessed are we that we can view whales and dolphins from our shorelines. We have a great number of sharks that both fascinate and frighten us. We have cute penguins and turtles, seals and an array of cunning birdlife. Below the depths are crustaceans, fish and the odd visitor from waters far away.

“It is known that there are some 2 200 species of fish in our seas, equivalent to about 15% of the total number of marine fish species worldwide. There are 270 families of fishes represented in South Africa, equivalent to 83% of all marine fish families known. Strikingly, up to 13% are endemic, ranking amongst the highest anywhere.” – Enviropedia

Andrey Kachaev is a diver who travels across the globe to film the weird and wonderful creatures that make the ocean their home. He recently visited South Africa and filmed a 5-minute video showcasing some incredible marine life that can be spotted in our two different oceans.

He filmed the usual marine life but also one or two bizarre occurrences that we just couldn’t pin a name to, let alone a species type. For example, is the species in the title image of a jellyfish, a worm or something else? Let us know in the comment section.
