This Earth Month, South Africans are showing up to the table in a way that could actually make a difference. All you need to do is share a plant-based meal with your loved ones.

South Africa (21 April 2026) – A global campaign called 1 Million Tables is asking people to do something so uncomplicated but impactful for Earth Month. To gather around a table and share one plant-based meal.

By encouraging people across the world to share a plant-based meal at a table together, the initiative aims to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, water use, and land pressure linked to food production. It’s an intentional way of connection that brings more climate awareness without overwhelming people with big intimidating changes.

The idea actually came to life at a table, with two friends asking what small action could help the planet and bring people together. Now, that one question has grown into a movement spanning 170 countries and nearly 90% of the world.

“What started as a single meal is now moving across borders, carried from one table to the next.”

South Africa has already found its seat at the table! So far, 136 tables have been registered across 74 towns and cities, hosting 679 guests between them. The spread is nationwide from cities to small dorpies, with people gathering at home and at restaurants with friends and family.

Based on Oxford University life cycle research, each plant-based meal avoids an estimated 1.3 kg of greenhouse gases, 95 litres of water, and over 2 square metres of land pressure compared to a typical omnivore meal. Take the current stat of 679 South Africans around the table, and that adds up to around 910 kg of greenhouse gas emissions saved and about 64,000 litres of water saved!

At the time of writing, Johannesburg has led the charge locally with 19 tables and 124 guests, followed by Cape Town with 16 tables and Durban with 9. But even people in the farthest-reaching spaces and smallest communities of our country have made an impact. One table in the Northern Cape alone gathered 25 people around a single meal!

Globally, the campaign has reached 2,378 tables and 19,151 people. That translates to 25,632 kg of greenhouse gases saved and 1.8 million litres of water saved, or about 3000 years’ worth of drinking water.

Earth Month takes place every April as a dedicated time to raise environmental awareness and take action on climate. 1 Million Tables fits that spirit without asking too much. It doesn’t require you to go vegan or overhaul your lifestyle.

There’s still time to add your table this April. Head to this website to register and watch your table light up on the global map alongside thousands of others across the world!
