While many are doing their part to keep people warm and fed this winter, a dedicated team in Cape Town is fighting to keep animals safe, one rescue at a time.
Western Cape, South Africa (07 July 2025) – While so many incredible human-focused charities have rallied to keep South Africans dry, safe, and fed this winter, there’s another community facing the cold with no voice of their own, and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA is stepping in to make sure they’re not forgotten.
As Cape Town experiences cold and wet winter weather, the dedicated team at the Cape of Good Hope SPCA is racing against the elements to rescue animals left freezing and exposed across the city.
Last week, the South African Weather Service issued a Level 4 warning for disruptive rain, following an already difficult week marked by heavy downpours and flooding. For animals without shelter, this is more than just uncomfortable; it’s dangerous.
“We’re finding animals chained in the freezing rain, drenched and shivering, with no protection in multiple communities,” says Belinda Abraham, spokesperson for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA. “These animals are all being brought into the SPCA but there are others out there who won’t survive unless we reach them in time.”
The organisation’s First Responders, integrated into the City’s emergency response systems, are out in force, rescuing animals in real-time and also preparing for a significant influx of those needing shelter and care.

And this is where the good news comes in: Cape Town, you can help.
Despite the severity of the situation, the SPCA has always been buoyed by the generosity of the public. Cape Town’s community spirit has consistently shown up and it’s needed now more than ever.
“Our community’s kindness has always been the difference between suffering and safety for Cape Town’s animals,” Abraham shares. “We’re asking everyone who can to help us with donations of towels, blankets, and dry and wet cat and dog food.”
It’s a simple ask, and one that can truly change lives. Lives that are often overlooked.

As the rain continues to fall, it’s the small acts of care – a blanket, a bag of food, a moment of empathy – that create warmth beyond weather. And in true Cape Town fashion, it’s the community that rises, time and time again.
