The thunder and lightning storm in Gauteng last night, the 15th of January 2018, were loud and charged. Johannesburg based storm chasing photographers set out ready to capture some breathtaking images.

Today Twitter is filled with amazing images of lighting and videos of thunder. We decided to share some of them with you.

“Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work.” – Mark Twain

Here are some really interesting facts about lightning we thought you might enjoy.

Did you know that Cloud-to-ground lightning bolts are a common phenomenon and that about 100 strike Earth’s surface every single second? Even though they are so common, we are still mesmerised by them. Maybe because their power is extraordinary. Did you know that each bolt can contain up to one billion volts of electricity?

Lightning is extremely hot, a flash can heat the air around it to temperatures five times hotter than the sun’s surface. The extreme heat can vaporise the water inside a tree, turning it to steam that may blow the tree apart.

Lightning can be so powerful that it can trigger forest fires, volcanic eruptions and snowstorms.
