The Perky Penguin Cafe in Gqeberha is supporting seabird conservation efforts in the most delicious way!
Cape Recife Nature Reserve, South Africa (12 January 2025) — Following the exciting news of a SANCCOB Coffee Shop bringing good coffee and helpings of hope to seabird welfare in Table View, Gqeberha is invited to take a seat at the Perky Penguin!
The Perky Penguin is here and ready to support conservation in the most delicious way. Located at the Cape Recife Nature Reserve, visitors can enjoy a menu brimming with all cheat-day favourites like burgers and waffles, all while enjoying a view like no other as seabirds roam in their reserve.
For SANCCOB (the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds), spots like the Perky Penguin offer an imperative way for them to financially fuel their conservation missions.
Looking at the plight of the African Penguin, efforts have never counted more than they do right now, what with the species being uplisted to Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) last year. In simple terms, this means that the African Penguin is on its last legs before extinction (read more about this here).
While the way forward for the seabird requires authorities to enact the sustainable management of purse-seine fishing with government support, there are other efforts that are keeping our penguins afloat. Rescues, rehabilitation, safe breeding grounds and research all require financial backing that everyday penguin lovers can make possible.
Each effort plays a critical role in the much bigger ecosystem that is saving the African Penguin through SANCCOB, and if you can support this by simply enjoying a soda float at the Perky Penguin, you should!
