Three incredible birds were spotted fighting over a large fish; the sighting was filmed in Kruger National Park – you don’t need a birding sticker to enjoy this one!
Kruger National Park, South Africa (16 August 2022) – The bird life in Kruger National Park is phenomenal, and one can spot hundreds of species when visiting the park. Often birds will keep to themselves, but every once in a while, they come together to either put on a show or have a total showdown. In this case, it’s a real showdown!
The team at Latest Sightings shared the incredible sighting, which was filmed by Nombekana’s safari guide – Rodney. Rodney captured the moment a Goliath Heron, an African Fish Eagle and a Saddle-Billed Stork went head-to-head for a very large fish.
According to Latest Sightings, African fish eagles are incredible hunters, using their immaculate eyes to spot food from high up when soaring in the skies. Herons and storks, on the other hand, specifically like in this case – love to fish for their food.
It is clear that the Goliath Heron caught a very big fish, and while it didn’t know precisely how to gobble the whole thing down, the other birds definitely did. They all had to contend with a hungry crocodile too! In the end, the Saddle-Billed Stork was the winner.
This is what Rodney had to say about the sighting.
“We decided to park off near a waterhole and watch animals as they come to drink. I had an amazing day with my client, after many days of incredible sightings in the park.”
“I decided to visit one of my favourite spots in the park – not expecting anything radical, really. Suddenly a goliath heron caught a fish and what happened next was nothing short of incredible. Luckily, I was recording the whole time.”
“It was more like disbelief – as I had never seen this before. You always hope for a cat action-packed sighting and hardly ever think about birds fighting.”
“Before we knew it, a fish eagle challenged the heron for the fish. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. While these 2 birds argue about who’s getting the food, a saddle-billed stork joined the scene and gets away with the fish.”
“While trying to make smaller sushi pieces from the fish, 2 crocodiles tried to move closer to the stork – but it managed to get away with its stolen meal.”
