A tiny mouse has the internet obsessed with its cuteness; the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital is treating the Woodland Dormouse using a tiny sling.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 January 2022) – The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital will be celebrating its 5th year of saving South African wildlife this year. We love seeing all the creatures that they care for, and the latest patient is possibly the cutest! A tiny mouse, well, actually a Woodland Dormouse, is making wildlife vet fans squee with excitement.

Each animal that is brought in has a story worth sharing, from being abandoned or falling out of a tree to being caught in snares and rescued from poachers.

The wildlife vet has created a platform that raises awareness for these animals and provides education to the public about the dangers of poaching.

A Woodland Dormouse is indigenous to Southern and Eastern Africa. The mouse is thankfully not endangered or on any watch-lists as they have strong populations throughout Southern Africa. They live in woodland, savannah, grassland and rocky areas.

Their foods of choice include seeds and insects. They are successful seed dispersers and form part of the food chain for larger predators.

The JWVH shared the story of their newest patient, and we can’t get enough! Take a read below.

“This tiny patient is a young Woodland Dormouse (Graphiurus murinus). He had been caught by a cat, and came all the way from the Waterberg to us for help. We suspect that he has a shoulder injury – we can only suspect as he is too small to really take radiographs. Sr Jacky has secured the arm in place with the tiniest bandage ever! With cage rest, we are hoping that the shoulder will heal and that he too will be released back into the wild one day.”

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital treats indigenous for free, so they rely on donations to keep doing the good work they do. Below are the various payment options for the Wildlife Vet; they rely on donations, so if you can, you can donate through the methods below.
