More than 50 eager volunteers spread out along Lagoon Beach for a trash bash this weekend on a mission to restore the health of their beloved coastline, collecting 321kg of trash!

Cape Town, South Africa (17 January 2025) – Lagoon Beach in Milnerton got a much-needed clean and spruce up this past Saturday! In a powerful collaboration, the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Trash Bash team joined forces with the passionate crew from Save a Fishie, transforming a morning of ordinary beachgoing into an extraordinary act of environmental stewardship.

Over 50 volunteers armed with gloves and trash bags, cleaned the vast area of the beach between the pier and the lagoon.

Thanks to their enthusiasm and collective dedication, these individuals removed an impressive 321kg of trash from the shore! Most of which were microplastics!

“Every piece of waste removed from the ocean environment reduces the chance of it entangling a seal, being ingested by a turtle, or leeching chemicals into coral reefs. Trash Bash is an easy way for you to have a positive impact,” said the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.

Zoë Prinsloo of Save a Fishie was thrilled over the day’s success sharing that the eventful day saw teams go beyond just picking up chip packets and plastic straws, as they even took on the task of moving a large blue crate by the pier as well as a tractor tyre near the lagoon mouth too!

“An incredible thank you to the Two Ocean Aquarium for partnering with us again and we look forward to many more cleanups together,” Zoë said.

To cap off the successful cleanup, Save a Fishie provided everyone with reusable metal straws, a small but significant step towards a plastic-free future!
