The Two Oceans Aquarium, partnered with Rethink the Bag, wants to assist all schools across South Africa to become plastic shopping bag-free by the end of 2018. This is how…
Rethink the Bag SA is a campaign that was launched by the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town to help fight the amount of plastic in the ocean. In partnership with the project, the aquarium is challenging all schools in South Africa to join them in banning single-use shopping bags.
Already, the campaign has had three schools sign up. Wynberg Girls High School, Prestwich Street Primary School and The Grove Primary School have all committed to making a change to help the environment.
“Together, there are more than 2 300 families represented by the learners and staff of these schools – if each person can get their household to pledge to shop with reusable bags only, more than 1 million single-use bags will be eliminated a year!” – Two Oceans Aquarium
That is incredible! The aquarium has set the intention to assist all schools across South Africa to become plastic shopping bag-free by the end of 2018.
The three schools have really stepped up to the mark to help be the change that the environment needs.
Wynberg Girls High School has officially banned single-use plastic bags on the school grounds and encourages their learners to take the lesson home. The school has also challenged Wynberg Boys to take up the task.
Prestwich Street Primary got the concept launched through lessons during natural sciences class, talking about sustainability and the risks associated with single-use plastic. The governing body and parents agreed to the pledge and now it is implemented into the school and home life of the learners.
The eco club at the Grove Primary school built a campaign and devised a Ban the Bag campaign strategy. The campaign was adopted by the entire school.
“The Grove pledges, for the good of the environment and our marine life, to no longer allow single-use plastic bags on our property. We will do our best to reduce and recycle plastic used in our school” – The Grove Primary School’s Plastic-Free Pledge.
If schools would like to get involved in making a change, they can find out how to here.
