Mixed-media artist Tharien Smith’s latest collection is taking onlookers to underwater worlds, celebrating the wonders of water bodies with skill, paint and discarded waste as a love letter to the essence of life.

Cape Town, South Africa (09 February 2025) — Mixed-media artist Tharien Smith has created a gorgeous and thought-provoking collection of art that’s taking onlookers both to underwater worlds and through the motions of our relationship to water.

Our most precious resource, Tharien’s ‘Water Memoirs’ is simultaneously a reflection of beauty and reminder of what we must all protect.

Glimpse of the Unseen

Her message is striking and subtle. The works are beautiful to look at, at first glance. Yet, they’re layered, with discarded waste seemingly submersed beneath their surfaces as if they were a metaphor for the environmental threats that lurk beneath the surface of our own world.

“Through my work, I aim to raise environmental awareness by incorporating discarded, “trashy” elements into my paintings, often hidden within vibrant colours and captivating imagery,” the artist explains.

“I believe nature is a constant reminder to reconnect with the cosmos, tune into its frequencies and align with our true selves. My art emphasises the urgency of change, calling for reflection, action and, above all, a deeper respect for the life-sustaining waters that bind us all.”

Tharien has committed to fully embracing her artistic vision for the past seven years. Her work continues to evolve as she does; gaining recognition for its innovative approach and exquisite pieces across various mediums, including acrylic paint and textiles with support from non-profit the Spier Arts Trust.

Presented by House Union Block, Water Memoirs is on at the Sisonke Gallery at the Cape Heritage Hotel in Cape Town and will run until 30 March 2025.
