The Vervet Monkey Foundation has been featured on the Dodo because of their amazing efforts to rehabilitate the monkeys and place them into safe living spaces.
The plight of the vervet monkey species in South Africa first came to light in 1989, when an orphaned baby vervet monkey, only hours old was discovered. It was discivered that the monkeys were considered vermin and the people were ordered to kill the orphaned monkey.
There were no facilities for these monkeys. This was why the Vervet Monkey Foundation was formed in 1993. As a place to offer sanctuary and safety for the indigenous breed.
During the last two decades the Foundation has developed a unique rehabilitation programme that has helped revolutionise the way in which these monkeys are rehabilitated.
“Our enclosure designs are now utilised in similar primate projects. Fundamentally, the Foundation has saved and improved the lives of more than six hundred vervet monkeys. The foundation has also achieved many firsts in the rehabilitation of this primate species with the aid of volunteers, gap year students and primate carers.”
The foundation was recently featured on the Dodo for its efforts in saving and rehabilitating a tiny orphan named Jerry. The video moved us to tears and really opened our eyes to the beauty of this tiny little species.
