A rescued donkey named Luke got his full fix of cuddles recently in a heartwarming moment captured on camera.

Ruimsig, South Africa (03 April 2025) — A rescued donkey named Luke recently enjoyed a full fix of cuddles in a moment too precious not to share.

Like many of the donkeys at the Rest Your Ass Donkey Sanctuary, Luke’s life wasn’t always filled with care—especially not to the degree evident in his cuddles video.

Years ago, Luke was rescued by the SPCA Benoni along with his mother, Luna, as well as several other donkeys.

The herd made their way to the Rest Your Ass Donkey Sanctuary based in Ruimsuig, Gauteng; a forever home for donkeys that have been abused, neglected or abandoned.

Donkeys come to the sanctuary from all over South Africa.

Luke is said to be quite a mischievous donkey with a big heart. His heartwarming embrace was captured on a Saturday when he was feeling unapologetically needy, and our hearts are all the more full thanks to the moment!

While the various reasons the donkeys find themselves at the sanctuary can be tough to digest for the sensitive among us, moments like Luke’s embrace remind us that time at the sanctuary isn’t the end of a donkey’s story. Instead, it’s the beginning of a much better one.

Rest Your Ass will always welcome support for the donkeys they care for. You can adopt a donkey (virtually) which essentially means you’ll be contributing to their care (deworming, food, winter blankets etc) from afar! You can find out more, here.
