Western Cape Premier Alan Winde to open vaccine site at Old Mutual, Cape Town.
Western Cape, South Africa (21 June 2021) – Today, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place, marking the opening of the Old Mutual COVID-19 vaccination site at Mutual Park, Old Mutual, Pinelands.
The private vaccination site will have an initial capacity of approximately 1 400 vaccinations per day, which will later be ramped up to approximately 3 000 vaccinations per day.
Premier Alan Winde will be joined by Dr Louis Van Der Hoven, who will represent Netcare, the CEO of Old Mutual Limited, Iain Williamson, and the MEC for Economic Opportunities and Finance, David Maynier. In the meantime, the Western Cape Government has established a trigger system that is guiding its response to the third wave. Its first trigger has already been activated.
“The trigger system aims to promote transparency using pre-defined markers which will guide our response, reduce transmissions and prepare health services,” Winde said.
“The first trigger warning is activated where there is an increase in the demand for healthcare services over the past 14 to 21 days.”
Western Cape Government’s COVID-19 response is guided by a 5-point plan.
“Our 5-point plan will ensure that we prevent the healthcare system from being overwhelmed. It will also ensure that we limit the need to de-escalate frontline healthcare services; and not interrupt the rollout of the vaccine programme,” Winde said.
The 5-point plan focusses on:
- Changing community behaviours to prevent infection;
- Surveillance and outbreak response;
- Scaling up the health platform’s COVID-19 capacity;
- Maintaining comprehensive services; and
- Safeguarding and protecting the well-being of healthcare workers.
