An elephant hospital has launched in India, and it has already taken in 26 abused elephants for treatment and specialised care.
Uttar Pradesh, India – Wildlife SOS is a non-profit organisation which was founded in 1995 with the aim of protecting wildlife and caring for those that had been injured. Their latest project was launched just a few months ago and exists to take in and care for abused elephants.
These elephants come from tourist attractions such as circuses, temples, riding camps, and private owners. The need for a hospital became too great which was why the organisation chose to open one.
When an elephant first arrives, it is evaluated by the veterinary team to see how treatment should proceed. Most of the animals are in poor physical condition due to years of neglect and malnutrition. That is why the hospital was specially designed to treat injured, sick, and geriatric elephants.
Once treatment has begun, the elephants are monitored day and night. When they are well enough to cope on their own again, they are sent to one of the two Wildlife SOS elephant sanctuaries.
The hospital is equipped with wireless digital radiology, ultrasound, laser therapy, an in-house pathology lab, and a medical hoist for lifting disabled elephants. The Wildlife SOS Elephant Hospital also has portable X-ray machines, ultrasound machines, and specialised foot-care tools.
They also have a jumbo-sized digital weight scale, laboratory testing capabilities, and a hydrotherapy pool for physiotherapy. The hospital is changing the lives of these abused elephants and giving them a chance to retire in peace.
