The Cheshire family has written a heartwarming chapter in the history of Durban Girls’ College.

Durban, South Africa (12 August 2024) – Durban Girls’ College celebrated a heartwarming milestone as four generations of the Cheshire family gathered to honour their deep-rooted connection to the school.

From the matriarch’s dedicated service to the youngest generation’s promising future, the Cheshire family’s story is a beautiful tapestry of tradition, education, and enduring bonds.

A legacy woven through generations

The matriarch of the family, Valma Cheshire (Class of 1955), her two daughters, Judith de Marigny (Class of 1978) and Susan Fleming (Class of 1986), along with Judith’s daughter, Justine Mamet (Class of 2003), and Justine’s daughters, Josephine Mamet (Grade 4) and Zara Mamet (Grade R), all gathered at DGC for a celebratory tea held recently.

Valma’s granddaughter, Caroline Cheshire, also attended DGC from 2010 to 2017.

The school’s Executive Head, Heidi Rea, had the privilege of meeting all four generations of members who have showcased a remarkable family legacy deeply intertwined with the school’s history.

Over and above attending the school, Valma Cheshire also went on to dedicate 25 years of service to the school as the Secretary to various headmistresses. Her dedication and passion for DGC have left an indelible mark on the school’s community.

If there’s ever been a family that has showcased profound loyalty to a school, the Cheshire family takes the cup!

“The Cheshire family’s enduring connection to our school is a testament to the lasting bonds and cherished memories that DGC creates. We are incredibly proud to celebrate this extraordinary legacy and the continued presence of the Cheshire family within our school community,” the school shared in a post.
