Women in and around East London still have time to take advantage of a free cervical cancer screening initiative at Frere Hospital.

East London, South Africa (08 July 2026) – One simple screening could save your life. Women in East London still have two days to make use of a free initiative that is helping detect cervical cancer early and, where possible, provide treatment on the very same day.

Running until 10 July, the four-day programme at Frere Hospital’s Gynaecology Clinic is giving women access to free HPV screening as part of a partnership between the Eastern Cape Department of Health, Walter Sisulu University and Movement Health 2030.

The initiative aims to make early detection easier, faster and more accessible.

“Women attending the programme receive Human Papillomavirus (HPV) screening with same-day results. Those who test positive and meet the eligibility criteria are offered same-day treatment, ensuring prompt care and reducing the risk of disease progression,” shares the hospital.

A dedicated team of healthcare professionals, including gynaecologist Dr Ngxola, is leading the campaign and helping ensure women receive expert care throughout the initiative.

According to CANSA, cervical cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among South African women, but it is the country’s leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Women in South Africa have a 1 in 41 lifetime risk of developing the disease.

Most cervical cancers are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that often causes no symptoms. Regular screening can pick up changes before cancer develops or detect it early, when treatment is more effective.

“The team is also educating women on the importance of regular screening, as early detection remains one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer,” the hospital adds.

If you’ve been putting off your screening or know someone who has, this is a timely reminder.

The campaign runs until 10 July 2026, which means there are just two days left for women in East London to take advantage of this opportunity. If you or someone you know hasn’t been screened yet, now is the time.

Pop into the Gynaecology Clinic at Frere Hospital before the initiative wraps up. It could be one of the most important, and quickest, health decisions you make this year.
