As Bafana Bafana battled on the pitch, Nhlanhla Ndlovu helped put South African culture in the spotlight during the FIFA World Cup halftime show.
Atlanta, USA (24 June 2026) – While South African fans were focused on Bafana Bafana’s Group A clash against the Czech Republic at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, another South African was making an impression on the same stage.
International theatre creative and performer Nhlanhla Ndlovu was part of the official halftime entertainment, helping bring a distinctly South African flavour to one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
Performing as a featured Djembe soloist and vocalist with the acclaimed Soweto Street Beat ensemble, Ndlovu took part in a vibrant showcase of African rhythm, music and storytelling that reached thousands inside the stadium and millions more watching around the globe.
It was an opportunity to showcase African music, heritage and talent to an international audience, while proudly flying the South African flag in a different way.
The performer is best known for his long association with The Lion King, having spent more than a decade performing in productions across Madrid, Broadway and North America. Throughout that journey, he has built a reputation for using performance as a way of connecting people across cultures and backgrounds.
That same spirit was on display in Atlanta.
As nations from around the world gather for football’s biggest tournament, cultural performances have become an important part of the World Cup experience, giving host cities and participating countries the opportunity to share their stories beyond the pitch.
