Hero in my Hood has been educating youth in a fun and creative way by illustrating educational activity books about common social issues.

South Africa (01 February 2022) – For children as young as six, the best way to learn valuable lessons is through fun, engaging and educational activities. Hero in my Hood was founded to help teach lessons while keeping things fun.

The organisation creates the fun activity pages for children aged 6 to 12 years. Characters Jongi, Thandi and their friends are illustrated in activity form on heroic adventures to learn important life lessons. Hero in my Hood was founded in 2016 by Mandy Lomberg and Kate Boyes.

Some of the lessons shared include good hygiene and handwashing, understanding gender-based violence, animal care and welfare, and general life lessons.

Each activity sheet is dedicated to social issues, and by handing the sheets out, they help raise awareness for issues that affect those areas.

Animal welfare organisation Funda Nenja was battling with their children, seeing pit bulls as trophy dogs and not being equipped to care for them, so they reached out to Hero in my Hood for help. They created a useful sheet about Pit Bulls to aid the organisation’s work with children and their dogs.

“Funda Nenja has long been concerned about the rapidly increasing numbers of Pit Bulls in Mpophomeni. This is a breed that requires responsible ownership and careful management to avoid behavioural issues. Some of these dogs are chained up or used as status symbols without the owners understanding that poor care of these dogs could lead to dire tragic consequences. In an effort to address this problem we have ordered 1000 copies of an excellent educational flyer on this topic from Hero in my Hood story activity books. We intend using these in our outreach work, starting by handing out a copy to everyone who attends the Friday dog school and clinic.” – Funda Nenja

We spoke with Mandy to see what exciting projects they have planned for 2022. She shared that they are working on translating their activity books into more South African languages.

“We are currently on a funding drive so that we can translate more of our work and distribute to more children throughout SA.” – Mandy Lomberg
