South Africans know and love their braaibroodjie, but adding marshmallows and chocolates is opening up a fun debate. Would you try it?

South Africa (17 December 2025) – The braaibroodjie is a beloved South African tradition. A grilled sandwich cooked over an open fire at a braai. It’s known for its unique sweet-and-savoury balance created by the carefully chosen ingredients, making it an absolute favourite.

Recently, a video shared by Jan Braai adds a playful twist on this classic. Adding marshmallows, sweets and chocolate pieces to the mix. Creating a gooey, indulgent treat that brings a whole new layer of sweetness.

They pose the question “would you try this and what else would you add to it?” Some comments came with interesting name suggestions, with some saying it’s worth a try. One said they would call it Rocky Road Braai Broodjie while another said “Give Me (S) MORE.

This recipe proves that even a simple dish can become a canvas for experimentation. So whether you like the classic braaibroodjie or eager to try new flavours, there’s always room for innovation around the braai fire.
