Competing locally and internationally, the Zimbabwe-born athlete has found her footing in South Africa as she balances school and sport while chasing a dream.

South Africa (17 December 2025) – Ashley Lupondo is carving out a name for herself in equestrian vaulting, a sport that combines gymnastics and balance. While her roots stretch across borders (being from Zimbabwe), Ashley’s sporting journey has been shaped in South Africa, from her early training to competing on local soil against continental and international rivals.

Ashley’s introduction to the sport was almost accidental. What began as playful trampoline tricks in the park caught the attention of her father’s colleagues, who recognised her natural ability. Combined with her love for horses and gymnastics, vaulting soon became the perfect fit. Ashley described her childhood around animals and nature

“It felt like a magical world. Like something out of a Disney movie.”

Although she has never competed in Zimbabwe, South Africa has been central to her development. Ashley has taken part in several local competitions, including the Africa Cup, where she placed first out of 14 competitors at just 13 years old. This is a moment she only truly appreciates now. She also credits improved facilities and access to equipment for helping her grow as an athlete, allowing her to train consistently and prepare properly, even on difficult days.

That preparation was put to the test when Ashley qualified for the FEI Junior World Championships, marking her first overseas competition. While mentally prepared during training, performing in front of large crowds proved overwhelming. Accustomed to intimate local competitions, the scale of the international stage brought pressure, expectation and nerves.

“I put so much pressure on myself.”

Balancing school and sport has also been a challenge, but Ashley says support from both her school and the vaulting community has kept her going, especially during moments of loneliness when family could not attend competitions.

“It used to get to me when I was younger, but now I cope much better because I have people around me who support me.”

Platforms like Discover Sport played a role in opening doors for Ashley to compete internationally, but her focus remains firmly on the work ahead. Her short-term goal is to qualify at the Concours de Voltige International (CVI) in Midrand next year, while long-term, she hopes to continue competing and inspiring younger South African athletes to believe that progress is possible.

“I feel like if you quit, the younger ones don’t understand why. You have to keep going for yourself and for them.”
