Festive Christmas trees across South Africa are bringing families together while supporting Reach for a Dream and helping children facing serious health challenges.

South Africa (17 December 2025) – As the festive season rolls in, Christmas trees have popped up in malls and airports across South Africa, not just dressed in lights and sparkle, but carrying something far more meaningful.

This year’s Disney-themed Chari-tree initiative is all about family fun with purpose, inviting South Africans to pause, snap a photo, and help make a child’s dream come true.

For the past decade, these much-loved charity trees have quietly become part of the country’s holiday rhythm. A place where parents lift kids for selfies, travellers slow their pace, and generosity feels as natural as humming a carol. This year, that tradition grows bigger than ever, spreading across a record-breaking 21 malls in eight provinces, and, for the first time, welcoming travellers at airports nationwide.

Whether spotted between shops or just beyond the departure gates, the trees serve as a gentle reminder that the festive season is about more than lists and luggage. Each installation includes a simple way to give back, with donations supporting Reach for a Dream Foundation, an organisation dedicated to creating dream experiences for children facing life-threatening illnesses.

Reach for a Dream has spent decades turning hope into something tangible, from dream days and special experiences to moments that help families breathe a little easier during unimaginably tough journeys. The Chari-tree campaign offers an easy, meaningful way for everyday moments to become part of that magic. A quick scan of a QR code can help turn a Christmas outing into a memory that changes a life.

The reach of the initiative mirrors the spirit behind it. From Gauteng to the Northern Cape, Limpopo to the Western Cape, families will find the trees in bustling malls like Mall of Africa, Canal Walk, Gateway Theatre of Shopping and Rosebank Mall. Even travellers passing through South Africa’s nine provincial airports, including OR Tambo, Cape Town International and King Shaka International, will be met with a festive welcome and a chance to give back before take-off.

Adding to the holiday cheer, malls around the country are leaning into hands-on, family-friendly experiences that encourage togetherness. Think holiday slides, ice skating, mini golf, arts and crafts, slime workshops, and plenty of photo-worthy moments that feel more joyful than sales-driven. It’s the kind of festive fun that creates memories first and shopping bags second.

At its heart, the Chari-tree initiative is a reminder that the season doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. Sometimes, it’s a decorated tree in a busy mall, a child tugging your sleeve, and a small act of kindness that carries far beyond December.

Because when families come together and generosity leads the way, the holidays really do become something special. And for a child waiting on a dream day, that magic means everything.
